In September 2008, Hurricane Ike wrecked havoc on the Texas Coast leaving the Bolivar Peninsula nearly decimated. Ike killed more than 100 people and caused $24.9 billion in damages, earning the awful title of the third costliest storm to ever hit America's shores. Virtually erased from the map, Bolivar was bent...but not broken. Brenda Cannon Henley artfully weaves her own tragic story of life-changing loss with the untold stories of the people of Bolivar. Winds over Bolivar is a resounding tale of devastation, triumph, and the prevailing winds of the indomitable human spirit.

Brenda’s book is a true account of what happened when hurricane Ike struck the Bolivar Peninsula. Although I live in Beaumont, 45 minutes north, I spent many hours, days, months, on the Peninsula during the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. My father also lived there for eleven years. I knew the Gilchrist and Caplen communities on the east end of the Bolivar Peninsula like the back of my hand. The first trip down there following the storm was like being in the twilight zone. I’ve witnessed the aftermath of other hurricanes that came calling, however, nothing compared to the devastation caused by Ike. It was unbelievable and very little was recognizable. I’ve often described it as a flat manila folder. Familiar landmarks were gone. I was helping only one person and had no idea what the rest of the Peninsula was going through until I read Brenda’s book. Read it. I think you will be astonished. Anyone who thinks it’s a pity party has never been in a situation like this.Product details

Winds Over Bolivar Brenda Cannon Henley 9781453745144 Books Reviews
It was a good read. Not really one that you couldn't put down for a while.
Good book. Received the purchase in a timely fashion. It was in perfect condition.
Excellent book written by Brenda Cannon Henley. Informative, the story of a a person I already knew to be a survivor in general, but she weathered Hurricane Ike's personal and financial assault as only Brenda could. Good book.
this is wonderful.... i too survived by evacuating from Port Bolivar and I too lost it all, a slabber they call us... Thru Ike i met many new friends, Brenda one of them. Yes, i cried when i read this book , but i smiled at the end, knowing i and many of us held each other together thru this tramatic event many suffered and are still suffering.
you will have many feelings reading this book... its told from the heart.
Having known Brenda since we were 8 years old, I knew that her book would be the truth and nothing else. I learned things from the book that definitely hadn't been in the media regarding IKE. It was an interesting read. I didn't want to put it down until the last word had been read. Brenda has a talent for writing and a love of the truth in every story she writes. I knew before the book came out that it would be a good book. I was not dissappointed. I have recommended Brenda's book to several people already, one of which is reading it at this time and I have ordered a copy for my future daughter-in-law.
Reading Brenda is like talking to her. You can feel the love and compasion she has for Bolivar and the people there. She was and still will be our neighbor on Front Street, we both are determined to be back with our view. The stories and interview she gives are nothing made up, the looks and comments on that cold day in Austin are real. They will continue to fight. This is a book to read even if you have not live or vacationed at the beach. It is a story of people meeting, loving, caring, crying and believing in the power of the Lord to see them through. The everyday things that continue to come and go, but the strength the people have to continue. Great, great book.
Since I went to Bolivar Elementary and lived in Crystal Beach during my formative years, almost all of the places Brenda spoke of were very familiar to me. When reading the book, I laughed and cried and hurt for all the people that live there and had their homes ruined, their lives affected. And I could feel the rains and winds while reading the book. I have been down there since to see my friends of over 40 years and have heard their stories also. When you all went to Austin for the peaceful protest, I cheered for the Bolivar-ites. I felt like I was right there standing in the erain with them. My heart and my chest swelled with pride at the pride and definite thoughts they all put into what was being said to the insurance people. Brenda, thank you soooo very much for bringing to life this story for all of us that still love Bolivar and all the residences there. I know I can only rate the book a 5 but I would prefer to rate it LOTS higher! Thank you for the memories and the love that you so exquiestly gave in the book to all of us that needed this. Please make sure we know of any more books regarding that area that you write. Again, thank you so much for a job well done. It was a pleasure "going back in time" with you!

Great book. Wish I had read it sooner. It is real life history and there are a lot of lessons to be learned from it. The book will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will make you mad. I feel like it is going to make me try harder to be a better person. God bless the people who lost loved ones and those who lost their homes.
